Few moves in hockey are as versatile and deceptive as the Sidney Crosby Mohawk. This elite skating technique allows players to scan the ice, maintain puck protection, and transition between forward and backward skating effortlessly—all while staying in a position to shoot or pass.
In this drill, Coach Nick, Director of Hockey Operations for Conacher Hockey, breaks down how to execute the Mohawk properly and use it to dominate in game situations.
Why the Crosby Mohawk Is a Game-Changer
Sidney Crosby has mastered the art of the Mohawk to control play, stay balanced, and stay dangerous in all zones. This move helps players maintain forward progress while remaining elusive and unpredictable to defenders.
How to Execute the Crosby Mohawk
Open Up Your Hips and Hands
Begin the move by opening up your stance and creating space with your top hand for better puck control.
Scan the Ice
Always keep your head up and eyes on the middle of the ice. Read the play and be ready to pass or shoot.
Stay in a Loaded Position
Keep the puck “loaded” in your shooting pocket. This keeps you ready to fire or dish a pass at any moment.
Transition Smoothly
Use the Mohawk to effortlessly shift between forward and backward skating. This gives you more control and flexibility in tight areas.
Protect the Puck
The wide base of the Mohawk stance and hip rotation make it easier to shield the puck from defenders while staying in control.
Coach Nick’s Pro Tip:
As you transition into the Mohawk, focus on keeping the puck in a ready-to-shoot position. Being dangerous at all times keeps defenders on their heels and opens up space for your teammates. If you're constantly in a position to shoot, pass, or make a play, defenders are forced to stay alert and react to your movements. This pressure makes it harder for them to commit to a defensive play, which in turn can create openings and opportunities for your teammates—like better passing lanes or more time and space to move.
Train the Mohawk at Home
No need to wait for rink time—train on your own using HockeyShot Revolution Tiles. Perfect for your basement or garage, they’ll help you master the Mohawk, improve edgework, and dominate the ice.
