Passing Drills with the Extreme Dangler

Passing the puck is a fundamental skill every hockey player needs to master, but off the ice it can be tricky to recreate the environment necessary to work on your passing skills alone or with a friend.

Fortunately, with the Extreme Dangler, you can set up your own passing drill that's both convenient and challenging.

The Dangler and its related but more advanced training aids are all adjustable, so you can customize them to fit your specific skill level as well as the particular circumstances of your drill, whether you're working up close, from a distance, or on the move. Just modify The Dangler to make passing through its gaps easier or more difficult.

A nice warm-up or beginner's exercise involves starting with The Dangler wide open and passing a puck or Green Biscuit Off-Ice Training Puck back and forth through the gap with a partner. Start close, passing nice and hard, then take a step back with each pass. See how far away you can get and can still pass it through the gap every time. To ratchet up the difficulty, simply slide the sides of The Dangler closer together to narrow the gap.

Once you've got the hang of how it works, make a game of it. Set The Dangler up with three sections: one wide, another narrower, and the third very narrow. Assign one point to a clean pass through the widest section, two points to the middle, and three points to the narrow section. If your pass hits one of the dividers and doesn't go through, you lose points. If it hits The Dangler and still goes through, award no points. For backhand passes, double the points to two, four, and six. Declare as the winner the first player to score 20 points.

Another one of my favorite passing drills with The Dangler is called juggling. Using two Green Biscuits at once, one player sends the puck over The Dangler with a saucer pass while the other player passes the puck through the gap underneath. With this drill, the use of two pucks speeds up the action and helps you work on your hand-eye coordination and reaction time. Juggling is also a great option when you want to incorporate movement into your passing. Have your passing partner move back and forth to help simulate the challenge of passing across the ice under a defender's stick or through his legs, with The Dangler representing that narrow lane you have to hit to successfully complete your pass.
